Projects
One copy of each project is given to the other students in the class and two copies to the Black Rock Press for its permanent archive.
Project 1
Design, compose and print a broadside—a single sheet of 12" x 16". The text may be poetry or prose, should be limited to no more than 15 lines. The piece may contain an illustration but it is not required. The broadside should be produced in an edition size of 25 copies.
Project 2 - Optional
Students will produce a “french fold” piece according to specifications given by the instructor.
Project 3
For the final project each student will produce a book of his or her own conception and design. This book should include many of the elements of bookmaking covered in the class, e.g., design, type composition, illustration, printing, binding. It is not necessary to print the book letterpress, but this is an option. Type could also be generated digitally. The project should reflect creativity, imagination, and fastidious production. The latter is very important; you probably won’t reach perfection, but you should strive for it.
Begin thinking about this project early in the semester and discuss your ideas with the instructors. Make sure you select a project that is not too large or complicated to complete by the end of the semester. More detailed specifications will be given for this project later in the semester. The final project should be produced in an edition size of at least 10 copies.
Please note that finishing your projects includes carefully distributing your type. Students who do not distribute their type by the end of the semester will receive a failing grade.
Quiz on Printing and Typographic Terms
This thirty-question short answer/multiple choice test will cover material discussed in class or contained in a reading assignment. It is designed to assure that each student has a grasp of the fundamental knowledge needed to do the work they will have to accomplish later in the semester.
