Ty Cobb was born in Virginia City, Nevada in 1915. After grammar school on the Comstock, his family moved to Reno where he attended Northside Junior High School. Returning to Virginia City, he graduated from the Fourth Ward School. College years were spent at the University of Nevada where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and graduated with a degree in English. He began working for the Nevada State Journal as a reporter in 1938. After stints as sports editor and managing editor, he retired as the paper's associate editor in 1975. His well-known column, Cobbwebs, began in 1965, and over 3,000 have been published.

Over the years Ty received numerous awards, including the Nevada Press Association's "Silver Makeup Rule," its highest honor; induction into the Nevada Wolf Pack's Hall of Fame; and the University of Nevada's Distinguished Nevadan award.
