The author lives in the San Joaquin Valley, California, on world-excellent farm-soil for growing food. Her first book, The Thicket Daybreak, was the 1997 winner of the Colorado Prize for Poetry, Center for Literary Publishing/University Press of Colorado. Over this Soil: An Anthology of World Farm Poems, her second anthology of farm poems, is forthcoming from the University of Iowa Press in Spring, 1998. She has taught writing at the University of the Pacific, and is currently pursuing graduate work in creative writing and film-making at the University of Iowa.

The book features a wrap-around cover handprinted letterpress at the Black Rock Press with a tipped on illustration from a painting by Iona Hepper and calligraphy by Meggan Laxalt.
